Designed with advice from the Preservation Trust of Vermont which has helped save and revive other ‘community-supported enterprises,’ the plan includes a place to share food and conversation with friends, a bright lively shop for basic groceries and papers as well as local foods and products, and continuation of the town recycling site. The store will anchor the revitalization of Algiers, defeating the impersonalization of sprawl and enhancing affordable housing, business sites, transportation, along with trails, brook access and a safe walkable village. The Friends have developed a Master Plan for all this, and have purchased critical lands. A lease will be developed to attract a knowledgeable storekeeper while the historic building will be owned in perpetuity by the Friends, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization.
